Welcome to the Shropshire Photographic Society

The society meets at the Gateway Education and Arts Centre in Shrewsbury on Monday evenings at 7.30pm (excluding Bank Holidays) from September to the following June.

Check out our programme and come and see us. We offer a variety of lectures, competitions and practical sessions, together with club outings. Visitors are always warmly welcomed and there is no obligation to join the club.

A Message from Our President

The Shropshire Photographic Society, grand of title purely due to its long and distinguished history, comprises a membership of hugely enthusiastic photographers. Some of us are professionals; most enjoy photography purely as a hobby. Some have many (many) years of experience; some are novices, but we all share a passion for the photographic image. The Society provides a focus for that passion where we can share, be inspired, and learn from each others’ experiences.

We have an active programme that runs throughout the season including photographic competitions, practical demonstrations, photography-related presentations, exhibitions and social events.

A highlight of our calendar is the Society trip which typically involves a significant number of our members spending a weekend away in a suitably photogenic location, inspiring each other to take great photographs and generally having a good time. Last season saw the members visit the Gower Peninsula in South Wales but previous trips have included the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.

We are a hugely friendly and inclusive group. Whatever your age, experience, equipment or technique (whether you’re shooting large-format black-and-white , regularly up to your elbows in darkroom chemicals, an avid Photoshop compositor, someone getting to grips with their first point-and-shoot camera or any number of alternatives) you’ll find us only too keen to help you get the maximum enjoyment out of your photography.

Come along and see us at the Gateway from September to May on Mondays at 7.30, there is no obligation to join and you will be warmly welcomed. The Gateway has excellent facilities including disabled access.

Close of the 2007-2008 Season

Well, the 2007-2008 season is now over. The competitions have all been won, the prizes have been presented and thanks to David Millington at Wroxeter Vineyard, a respectable amount of wine has been drunk.

The Society Photographer Of The Year award was hotly contested and went right to the wire this year. In the end, Danny Beath battled his way through to win by just three points. Ever modest, Danny was convinced he was no contender this season but once again his outstanding talent, dogged determination and endless patience came through.

Special thanks must go to Mavis Thornton, Peter Owen and Judy Mainwaring for organising this year’s end-of-season event. The format, including the vineyard tour and wine tasting made a very welcome change which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The challenge is now laid down to top it next year...

This year sees former president, Judy Mainwaring, relinquish her post. Judy has worked phenomenally hard over the last three years in her role, taking on much more work than could reasonably be expected and the society has benefited from it immensely. It is to my great relief that Judy has agreed to accept the role of Vice President for the forthcoming year, as I’m sure I shall be depending on her wealth of experience to a very great degree. Never one to stop working, Judy will concentrate her talents on many of the equally important day-to-day aspects of the society. Who knows, it may even give her more time to take photographs. Judy’s approach to the presidency has been warm, welcoming and inclusive, running the society for the benefit of its members. I very much intend to continue this trend during my term as President and very much hope that the society continues to thrive under my stewardship and with the ongoing support of the committee. I consider it a very great honour.
